October was a month of both eeriness and scholarship, brimming with engaging conversations!
Let’s recap October:
We had a great time delving into the captivating history of Gothic Novels during our seminar! Our discussion highlighted how these works blend horror, romance, and the supernatural against dark and mysterious backdrops. We explored key elements such as eerie settings, supernatural occurrences, and the psychological conflicts that draw readers in. It was particularly fascinating to examine how themes like forbidden knowledge have evolved over the past 250 years and shaped modern horror and psychological thrillers. At the beginning of the seminar, Sara presented a mini lesson on the history and characteristics of Gothic fiction, which we recorded. You can access that recording and our discussion notes on Patreon.
We read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as a community, and it sparked some really lively conversations on Discord and during our book club meeting. It was great to see everyone share their thoughts and interpretations of the novel!
The series "Classics We Love and Loathe" has ignited some fascinating conversations, bringing to light a variety of classic literature that people feel strongly about—whether they admire it or can't stand it. We’ve had great guests on this month and we can’t wait for you to hear from our November guests! If you haven't had the chance to listen yet, now is the perfect time to catch up on any episodes you might have missed:
What to Expect in November
I Capture the Castle
This month, we're diving into Dodie Smith's charming novel, I Capture the Castle. Picture this: a crumbling castle in the beautiful British countryside, where our witty and book-loving narrator, Cassandra Mortmain, takes us on a journey. It's the perfect escape as we wrap up the year, offering a mix of humor and heart that makes for an enchanting read. We’ll discuss it at our book club on Wednesday, December 4th at 7 PM ET.
Giftable Books Seminar
You're invited to our Giftable Books seminar on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 PM ET. Throughout the year, we've explored various books, and now it's your opportunity to share your favorites. Please bring along the books you believe would make excellent gifts, along with the stories that make them special. This is a wonderful chance to discuss why you cherish these titles, discover new recommendations from fellow attendees, and plan your holiday shopping list, all while connecting with others in our book-loving community. During Chelsey’s maternity leave, classes will be replaced with seminars, a discussion-based, book club-style meet-up that will not be recorded. This is just temporary until Chelsey and Sara return to recorded webinars this winter.
We hope to see you around Patreon this month, we’re excited for the discussions ahead! Until then, we declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading. How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!
