Slaughterhouse-Five and science fiction for literary fiction lovers
that weird book you didn't think you'd love
Hey, listeners!
Based on our reading tastes, it might surprise you to learn how much we both enjoy Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, but we really truly did! In today’s episode, we talk about our previous experiences with the book and why this particular sci-fi novel works for us. We also explore the book as a war, or anti-war novel, dig into the philosophy of the book, and share what we love about metafiction. It’s a great episode—and because it’s basically impossible to “spoil” this book—it’s perfect for listening to whether or not you’ve read Slaughterhouse-Five.

Coming up:
We’re sticking with sci-fi next week to give you a TBR toppler filled with our favorite speculative fiction titles. Then, on May 4th, we’ll be back with an episode discussing In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. We’re both really enjoying reading this one and can’t wait to deep dive into it!

Currently reading:
We often organize our reading by picking up books that might make good pairings for upcoming episodes. Currently, we’re both exploring books that might connect well with In the Time of the Butterflies and The Blue Castle. Chelsey also recently read Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird and Sara is reading (and loving!) The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.

We declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!
