Hello there!

It’s been a few months since we appeared in your inbox. We hope you’re enjoying spring and preparing your summer reading lists. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to last week’s episode focused on summer reading and backlist pairings, you can catch up here.

Today, we’re talking about Romance in Marseille, a novel by Claude McKay published posthumously in 2020. Set in the south of France, this novel follows Lafala, a Black sailor who becomes wealthy after winning a lawsuit against a shipping line for mistreatment he experiences as a stowaway. McKay pushed the boundaries of the late 1920s with this novel, hence its delayed publication. We hope you enjoy our conversation about this new-but-old work!

We’ll be taking a summer break from the podcast, as we continue to navigate life with our kiddos as well as some other big changes. But, we’re always reading! This summer, we’re reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry together on Patreon. Head on over to our Patreon site to sign up at the $8 Literary Scholars level and check out the three-part reading schedule and corresponding meetings.

We hope you are absolutely loving all the joys that this season of reading brings, whatever it looks like in your corner of the world! Thank you for your support and cozy community.
