No new episode but some resources and reading lists
Hi, listeners,
First, we wanted to be sure that you all know we don’t have a new episode coming out this week. However, there are five Tuesdays in June so you’ll still get four episodes this month. Here’s what you can expect coming your way:
Tuesday, June 9: I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
Tuesday, June 16: A conversation about YA literature with Alli of The SSR Podcast
Tuesday June 23: Passing by Nella Larsen
Tuesday, June 30: Best backlist summer reads
More importantly, we’ve been thinking and reflecting a lot this week on our role in fighting for racial justice as two white creators and educators. For now, we’d like to share some links to resources. We’re far from perfect and not the experts here, but we know that Novel Pairings is a community of lifelong learners who are eager to do the work. This is a week to begin or to deepen our commitment to unlearning racist ideas and becoming antiracist advocates. We’ll be spending some time with these links and listening to Black voices today, we hope you’ll join us.
This link is the most comprehensive resource we’ve come across. It was put together by Black Lives Matter and includes petitions to sign, numbers to call, and places to donate.
Traci of The Stacks Podcast put together a list of Antiracist Nonfiction Reading for anyone who wants investigate their own biases and determine what do do next.
Jaime of Absorbed in Pages posted a companion list of Antiracist Fiction Reading. Reading fiction promotes empathy and understanding so while it’s not the end goal, it’s a good place to start.
The National Education Association’s Ed Justice website is a great place for educators to get ideas on how to support Black Lives Matter in their classrooms and begin having conversations with students about racial justice.
Read Ibram X. Kendi’s latest article The American Nightmare to begin to acknowledge the history of racial violence in America and to understand the term antiracist.
Read articles from The 1619 Project or listen to the podcast version of the Nikole Hannah Jones’ Pulitzer award-winning work.
Love,
Chelsey & Sara
