New Episode: Fall Classics Preview
Hey, listeners—
Get out your sweaters and sharpen your pencils! Today we’re previewing the classics we’ll be covering on our fall season, and we are so excited to share them with you! Here at Novel Pairings, fall is its own reading mood. Fall reading is equal parts academic and witchy and spooky and cozy, and we are leaning into all of those feelings in our line up.
Mostly though, we want this season to feel like going back to school—in a good way! We’ll get a little more academic and a bit nostalgic for our own high school days, but we’ll also explore books and genres that are frequently left out of the standard curriculum. We can’t wait to hear what you decide to read along with us!

Coming Up:
On August 18, we’ll be discussing the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. It’s no secret that neither Chelsey nor I is a huge fantasy lover, but we both loved talking about this fantasy classic. This episode is so fun—and a little longer than average! We discuss the genre as a whole, Tolkien as a writer, and what we learned about ourselves as readers through this experience. You’re not going to want to miss this!
And then, for our last episode of August, we’re establishing a tradition be releasing a seasonal wrap-up on the last Tuesday of our summer season. These episodes are always exciting for us. We’ll share our favorite episodes, the best books we read in our non-podcast reading, and some personal updates. Remember you can subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast player to make sure you never miss an episode!
Currently Reading:
This week I read the most delightful retelling of a classic, Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan. Kwan is famous for his Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, and his new book also revels in glitz and glamour as a retelling of E.M. Forrester’s A Room with a View. The book is about Lucie Churchill who meets the handsome and enigmatic George Zao while attending the wedding of the century on the Isle of Capri. I was swept away by the luxury and humor in this book, but I also love the way Kwan weaves in an exploration of race, class, and micro-aggressions. It’s pretty brilliant.
Now I’m reading Lovely War by Julie Berry, which I had wanted to read before our episode on The Odyssey. It’s a Young Adult WW2 novel, told through the perspective of Greek gods and goddesses. It hasn’t totally captured me yet, but I’m going to stick with it because the premise is just too perfect for me.
